Fox Mulder grew up in the seemingly-idyllic surburban sprawl of Martha's Vineyard in the late 1960s, when concerns were turned toward who was setting up the next game of Stratego and if Captain Kirk was going to get out of trouble on Star Trek rather than anything bigger or broader. Born in the typical sixties nuclear family unit of Mom (Teena), Dad (Bill) and sister (Samantha), nothing was more important than a summer's baseball game or a math test next Friday. This insulated existence was turned inside out when Mulder was twelve and his sister, Samantha, was eight. Both Mulder and his sister had been left home alone while their parents attended a work function for Bill, which led to the inevitable fight about what to watch on television. However, concerns were bigger than Star Trek versus Green Acres, because it was that summer's afternoon that Samantha was abducted, seemingly by aliens, and set in motion a chain of events that redirected the entire course of Mulder's life. Despite the fact that it couldn't have been his fault, shortly after Samantha's disappearance, Mulder's parents divorced. He studied and became increasingly interested in the psychology of criminals, leading to a scholarship to Oxford and, eventually, to a brilliant career at the FBI in the Behavioral Sciences unit. However, tracking down serial killers and suicide bombers didn't fulfill his spiritual side and it was only after accidentally stumbling upon the X-Files, those cases too weird to be looked at as anything but a flight of fancy, that Mulder found his true calling and what he hoped was the key to finding his long-lost sister. He manned the X-Files alone for a while, perfectly content to be written off as "Spooky Mulder" so long as it meant others left him alone in his basement. However, after three years of wasting his considerable talent, the Powers that Be (read: Assistant Director Skinner) assigned a more "rational" partner to Mulder in hopes that the X-Files project would be debunked and decommissioned and Mulder could be brought back into the fold of the Behavioral Sciences unit. Skinner couldn't have been more wrong. After being assigned Dana Scully as a partner, Mulder's fascination with conspiracy theories and finding his sister only grew. Scully herself began to be drawn in by the paranormal and experienced her own abduction, as well as any number of not-so-easily explained phenomena. Mulder enters Hearts and Minds after the close of the season 6 finale, Biogenesis, in a state of paranoid schizophrenia after being exposed to an alien artifact. |
| PERSONALITY |
Mulder is, in one word, obsessive. Unwilling to give up on a lead or a story no matter how out of the park it may seem, he will stick with a case until he reaches a logical (or illogical) conclusion. When other agents would drop a cold file, Mulder would keep it with him for years, continuing to investigate it when time permitted until he reached a solution that could satisfy him. He's also very loyal, as demonstrated by his early trust in Dana Scully, the agent assigned to debunk his work, and his continued trust in Diana Fowley, even after she betrayed him to the powerful Syndicate. This trusting nature is very much at odds with his conspiracy theories and makes an interesting juxtaposition—the man who thinks everyone's out to get him, but lets his enemies right into the fold. The best way to sum up Mulder's personality is a pair of catchphrases uttered by him throughout the show: I want to Believe and Trust No One. These are his operating principles and his mantra. |
